Quick answer · 30 sec
DEPENDS Hakata for most trips — Tenjin if your nights run past midnight

Stay at Hakata Station for logistics: the airport is 5 minutes and ¥260 (~$1.75) away, the shinkansen and every JR day trip leave from the building, and the temple circuit is on foot. Stay in Tenjin if you'll be out past midnight — the subway stops around 00:25 while the bars and yatai run to 2–3am, and that gap is the one real reason to pay Tenjin prices. They're two stops and ¥210 (~$1.40) apart, so the ¥2,000–5,000 (~$13–33) nightly difference shouldn't decide it; your trip pattern should. Dark horse: Gion, ten minutes' walk from Hakata, wins atmosphere-per-yen outright.

Three ways to win this decision

The verdicts
WORTH IT First-timers, day-trippers, one-nighters, early flights

Logistics: Hakata wins

Airport in 5 minutes, shinkansen at the door, hundreds of restaurants inside the station complex, lockers everywhere, and the temple circuit an 8-minute walk away. Near-unanimous among experienced travellers — roughly two-thirds of where-to-stay advice lands here. Full verdict →

WORTH IT Bars, clubs, yatai crawls past midnight

Nightlife: Tenjin wins

The bars run to 2–3am, clubs to 5am on weekends, and the Tenjin and Nagahama yatai rows are on your doorstep. Sleep here and the midnight-subway problem simply disappears — you walk home. Full verdict →

WORTH IT The underrated third answer

Atmosphere: Gion wins

Old-town lanes, the temple circuit on your doorstep, ¥8,000–15,000 (~$53–100) a night, and still a ten-minute walk to Hakata Station. The best value-per-yen verdict in the city — most visitors never consider it. Full verdict →

Two downtowns, one city — an unusual structure for Japan, and the whole decision in one table.

Day-trip nuance most guides miss: JR and shinkansen trips (Nagasaki, Beppu, Kumamoto, Kokura) favour Hakata; Nishitetsu trips (Dazaifu, Yanagawa) favour Tenjin. Count which kind your itinerary leans on.

The last-train gap

The deciding fact

The subway stops around midnight; Fukuoka's bars and yatai run to 2–3am. That gap is the single best reason to sleep in Tenjin or Daimyo if you're here for the nightlife — or to budget for the taxi and stay in Hakata anyway, where everything else is easier.

Run the numbers before you pay the Tenjin premium, though: a night taxi from Nakasu or Tenjin back to a Hakata hotel is roughly ¥1,000–2,000 (~$6.65–13.35). If you'll only have one big night out, staying in Hakata and paying for one taxi beats paying ¥2,000–5,000 (~$13–33) extra every night. If every night is a late one, Tenjin — or Daimyo next door, which has the better bars anyway — pays for itself.

Wait — is it Hakata or Fukuoka?

The name confusion

Same city, two names, and the split is 400 years old: Hakata was the merchant port east of the Naka River, Fukuoka the samurai castle town to the west, merged in 1889. Your bullet-train ticket says Hakata; your boarding pass says Fukuoka. They are five minutes apart on one subway line.

The naming vote of February 1890 is the best story in the city: Hakata held 17 assembly seats to Fukuoka's 13 and should have won its own name back — but four Hakata legislators failed to show up, the vote tied 13–13, and the chairman, an ex-Fukuoka-domain samurai, broke the tie his way. Hakata got the station as a consolation prize, which is why the shinkansen has delivered you to 'Hakata, Fukuoka' ever since.

Hakata vs Tenjin, answered

FAQPage schema paired
Which is better for first-timers, Hakata or Tenjin?

Hakata, and it isn't close: 5 minutes from the airport, shinkansen in the building, and Gion's temples an 8-minute walk. Experienced-traveller advice runs roughly two-thirds Hakata. Choose Tenjin only if late nights are the point of your trip.

How far apart are Hakata and Tenjin really?

Two subway stops on the Kūkō line — about 5 minutes, ¥210 (~$1.40) — or a 15-minute walk through Nakasu. There's also a ¥150 (~$1) flat-fare bus between them. Never plan them as separate bases; you'll cross between them daily without noticing.

Is Nakasu a good place to stay instead?

It's the neon island between the two — yatai row on the river, and a working red-light district on its eastern blocks. Hotels there are fine and often cheap, but it's nobody's first recommendation, and families are steered elsewhere. We handle it plainly at the Nakasu page.

Where should I stay for day trips?

Match the operator: JR trips (Nagasaki, Beppu, Kokura, Kumamoto) leave from Hakata; Nishitetsu trips (Dazaifu, Yanagawa) leave from Tenjin. If your list is mostly JR — it usually is — sleep at Hakata and ride two stops when Dazaifu day comes.

Should I book a hotel near the airport?

No — this is the one city where an airport hotel is genuinely pointless. The airport is two subway stops and ¥260 (~$1.75) from Hakata Station; you can leave a Hakata hotel 40 minutes before a domestic flight. International flights add a 10–15 minute terminal shuttle, so allow a little more.

Is Tenjin under construction right now?

The Tenjin Big Bang rebuild is mostly delivered, not mostly disruption: ONE FUKUOKA BLDG opened April 2025, Daimyo Garden City is finished, and the major construction winds down through 2026. It's a newer, taller Tenjin — hoarding-lined streets are no longer the story.

What about Gion — is it its own answer?

Yes, and it's the underrated one: old Hakata's temple quarter, ten minutes' walk from the station, with midrange rooms at ¥8,000–15,000 (~$53–100). You give up nothing on logistics and gain the city's best morning walk. Full case: Hakata & Gion.
