Here’s how to spend it.

Everything, in minutes from Hakata Station

The one map that matters

Fukuoka Airport is two subway stops — about five minutes and ¥260 — from Hakata Station. It is plausibly the best-located major airport in the world, which is why an 'airport hotel' here is pointless. One catch: international arrivals land at a separate terminal and need the free 10–15 minute shuttle to reach the subway at the domestic side. The same convenience runs the whole trip — here is every decision on this site, plotted in one-way minutes.

Minutes are one-way from Hakata Station by the fastest sensible route, off-peak. Fares are rounded IC-card singles; Beppu and Nagasaki are the limited-express fare, which is exactly the maths the JR Kyushu pass changes.

The Fukuoka discount is real

Midrange hotels here run ¥8,000–13,000 a night — 30–35% below Tokyo for a better breakfast and a shorter walk. Fukuoka has no marquee monument, and the review data is blunt about it: TripAdvisor's #1 attraction here is a park, #4 is an underground shopping mall, and #6 is the train station. That is not a failure — it's the brief. You come to Fukuoka to eat at the source (tonkotsu ramen, motsunabe, yatai counters at midnight), to feel a young, walkable city, and to use the best-connected base in Kyushu. Plan it as a food-and-base city and it over-delivers; hunt monuments and you'll be gone by noon.

The eight questions everyone asks first

FAQPage schema paired
How do I get from the airport to the city?

Subway, Kūkō line: two stops and about five minutes to Hakata Station, ¥260 (~$1.75). It is plausibly the best-located major airport in the world. One catch — international arrivals need the free 10–15 minute shuttle to the domestic terminal first. Full walkthrough: airport to city.

Is Fukuoka affected by the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake?

No — Fukuoka city is completely unaffected, and every day trip we rank (Dazaifu, Yanagawa, Itoshima, Kitakyushu, Nagasaki) runs normally. The disruption is south of Kumamoto: a suspended shinkansen segment and a closed castle. Dated detail: southern Kyushu access.

How do I get around?

Three subway lines (Kūkō, Hakozaki, Nanakuma) from ¥210, a ¥150 flat-fare bus zone in the centre — guides still print ¥100; that ended in 2021 — and a core so compact you'll walk more than you ride. Subway gates take foreign contactless cards directly. Details: getting around.

Where should I stay?

Hakata for logistics (station, airport, temple circuit), Tenjin or Daimyo for nightlife — the subway stops around midnight and the bars run to 3am, which settles it for night owls. Gion gives the most atmosphere per yen. The full decision: where to stay.

How many nights do I need?

Two nights covers the city itself — that's the honest answer. But ask 'how long for Fukuoka plus day trips plus a Hawks game or sumo' and four to six nights is the better trip. The reframe that changes the answer: how many nights.

Are the yatai worth it?

Yes — done right. The stalls average 3.5/5 because tourists default to the priciest row. Favour Tenjin and Nagahama over the Nakasu riverside, ask prices before ordering, carry cash, expect a one-drink minimum. Average spend is ¥1,923 (~$13). The playbook: yatai guide.

What's the one unmissable thing?

A SoftBank Hawks baseball night at the PayPay Dome — tickets from about ¥3,500, and the 2025 Japan Series champions play in front of the loudest crowd in Japanese sport. Rainy-day alternative: teamLab Forest, which — despite the persistent rumour — never closed. The case: Hawks game.

When should I go?

October–November is the sweet spot: dry, 20°C, sumo in November and the ginkgo turning at Kushida Shrine. May is the runner-up. Yamakasa (1–15 July) is spectacular and books out the city; hotel sellout dates and month-by-month detail: best time to visit.
