The blue-flower field everyone puts on the wrong island
The correctionNemophila — baby blue eyes — is a Fukuoka spring signature, and it grows here, on the sandbar, not on Nokonoshima.
The mix-up is everywhere in English travel writing: a photo of a blue nemophila field captioned Nokonoshima. Nokonoshima's spring flower is rapeseed — the big yellow canola field — and its signature season is cosmos in October and November. The nemophila is at Uminonakamichi, along with tulips, narcissus, roses, hydrangeas, sunflowers, its own cosmos and roughly 2,000 cherry trees that peak in late March and early April. If you're planning a trip around one blue photograph, you want this park and you want April.
The scale is the thing to plan for. Three hundred hectares is not a stroll — hire a bike at the gate, ¥600 (~$4) for three hours in the spring and autumn seasons or ¥500 (~$3.35) for a whole day in summer and winter, and the park turns from a slog into the nicest cycling in the city. There's an animal forest with capybara and kangaroos, a large play zone, and a summer Sunshine Pool charged separately. TripAdvisor has the park at 4.3 from 506 reviews, joint-highest in Fukuoka.

The ferry is the fun part and it turns two half-days into one good day: the Tower and the gold seal in the morning, boat across after lunch. Sailings run about every two hours, so check the return time before you buy a park ticket at 15:30.
